Krefeld Zoo

Krefeld

They particularly enjoy wallowing in the mud or taking a nap in the shade of the trees. The black rhinos are something of a secret star at Krefeld Zoo, which is known far beyond the borders of the country for keeping and breeding the endangered pachyderms. Although the animals are actually solitary animals and there are separate enclosures for bulls and cows, many small rhinos have already been born in the Lower Rhine region. When you visit the African savannah, you can watch them play from various viewing platforms.

However, the butterfly jungle is a much more graceful sight. More than 200 colorful butterflies buzz through the tropical vegetation. Here you can experience a small miracle of nature. At the caterpillar boxes, you can watch in amazement as an egg first becomes a caterpillar, then a chrysalis and finally a beautiful butterfly.

But the other animals living in the Rainforest House, the Gorilla Garden, the Meerkat Lounge and the predator enclosure are also always ready for visitors. They only keep to themselves on Christmas Day. On all other days of the year, the zoo offers various guided tours, activities or talks and workshops where you can learn more about the different habitats, feeding habits and survival tricks of animals from all five continents. An individual night safari is particularly exciting, and not just for children.
