The special exhibition "Stereotypes of the Neanderthal" at the Neanderthal Museum provocatively questions the traditional image of the Neanderthal. It focuses on the diversity and social structure of prehistoric communities instead of just showing the muscle-bound hunter. Women, children and older people are therefore the focus of the show, which reflects early life on the basis of new scientific findings.

A particular highlight is the accompanying audio tour, with texts written by archaeologist and bestselling author Rebecca Wragg Sykes. Four Neanderthal women talk about their everyday lives. The figures, based on archaeological finds, offer visitors emotional insights into topics such as birth, loss and hunting. Visitors to the exhibition thus embark on an emotional journey into the past.

Numerous hands-on stations and an exciting accompanying program of guided tours and workshops make the exhibition an interactive experience.

Another highlight

Outside the museum building, directly at the site where the Neanderthal man was found, visitors come across the "Höhlenblick" adventure tower, which is barrier-free thanks to internal and external ramps. The 22-metre-high, open steel structure is crowned by a fifty-fold enlarged replica of the original skull. Virtual telescopes on the top platform allow visitors to travel back to the Stone Age.
