Wild bison

Bad Berleburg

The majestic bison, Europe's largest wild land mammals, have become native to the Rothaargebirge. The project to reintroduce these impressive animals is unique in Western Europe: in addition to a free-roaming herd of bison that moves independently through the forests, there is a fenced bison wilderness where you can experience the animals up close.

For those who want to see the bison for sure, there is the bison wilderness on the Rothaarsteig, a fenced-in 20-hectare area where a herd of several animals lives. You can observe the impressive animals up close on a 3-kilometre circular trail. Wooden footbridges and viewing platforms provide views of the gentle giants, while information boards provide fascinating details about the bison, their behavior and their history.
