Externsteine

Horn-Bad Meinberg

Millions of years ago, these layers of rock were still horizontal and hidden. But they were raised up by the mighty forces of nature and formed into the impressive shapes you see today through the constant action of ice and water. It is as if the earth itself is revealing its secrets and giving you a glimpse into its past.

Around 500,000 people visit the Externsteine every year, and many are overwhelmed by their mystical aura. Some even believe that these stones have magical powers. If you take a closer look at the five gigantic sandstone rocks, you will realize that they have cast a spell over people since time immemorial.

However, nature has not worked here alone. In the Middle Ages, the Externsteine were further shaped by human hands. The inhabitants of the time erected a Christian place of worship with a grotto, a grave and an artistic relief depicting a biblical scene. Today, this relief of the Descent from the Cross is considered a work of art of European significance. In the 19th century, secular elements were added: stairs and a viewing platform were carved into the rocks.

When you visit the Externsteine, you should definitely pause for a moment to admire the reflection of the rocks towering high into the sky in the clear water of the adjacent lake. This image is a unique photo motif that has already captivated many people. But the Externsteine also look breathtaking and unique from other angles.
