Bruchhauser Steine

Olsberg

Imagine standing in front of imposing rock formations that have watched over the landscape for thousands of years. The Bruchhauser Steine in the Sauerland are just that: a breathtaking natural wonder that will leave you in awe. These bizarre rocks, up to 92 meters high, rise majestically out of the forest and tell the fascinating story of a bygone era.

Did you know that the Bruchhauser Steine are the first National Natural Monument in North Rhine-Westphalia? This makes them not only an impressive natural experience, but also a specially protected site of outstanding importance.

During a visit, you can explore the four main rocks - Bornstein, Ravenstein, Goldstein and Feldstein - on well-signposted hiking trails. Each rock has its own magic and offers spectacular views of the surrounding nature. The unique flora and fauna around the Bruchhauser Steine is also particularly exciting. Here you will come across rare plants and animals that can only be found in this special place.

When the heather blossoms in late summer, the nature reserve is covered in purple and violet - a colorful highlight and photogenic eye-catcher. But a walk across the "Neuer Hagen" high heath is a special nature experience at any time of year. Alpine and arctic plant species grow between birch trees, mosses, ferns and gnarled stunted pines. Rare bird species such as the woodlark and the great grey shrike feel at home in the largest high heath in North Rhine-Westphalia.

What they saw behind the cloud of dust in the rock during blasting in the summer of 1907 left the quarry workers in the Sauerland region breathless: a labyrinth of wonderfully shaped stalactites opened up before their eyes. Artfully grown stalagmites and stalactites emerged from the darkness like stone curtains hanging from the rock ceiling - more impressive than any sculptor could have created.
