LWL museum boat lift - A heart for inland waterway captains

The Henrichenburg boat lift in Waltrop is not just a must for the technology fans among you. Also for all of you whose heart beats for inland shipping! The ship's hoist near Waltrop, the "elevator for ships", has already been around for several years. It was opened in 1899 by Prussian King Wilhelm II and was a real prestige object. Lifting a loaded ship weighing several tons over 14 meters was a real feat back then! Today, in addition to the fantastic view of the Dortmund-Ems Canal from the ship's hoist, the museum, which takes you on a journey through the history of the structure and the people on the canal, is also impressive.

A masterpiece - not just for technology fans

The ship's hoist was not only a technical showpiece but is also an eye-catcher thanks to its special stone appearance, both in the past and today. In the historic machine hall, you can learn all about the construction of the building and its special technology. A historic shipyard as well as steamships and floating work equipment in the outer harbor are further attractions. On board the goods ship "Franz-Christian", an exhibition gives you an insight into the life of the bargemen and their families. As an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Route, the Henrichenburg ship lift is one of the most important industrial monuments in the Ruhr region.

Elixir of life, object of longing and musical motif

The theme of water can also be found in other activities in and around the boat lift. Special exhibitions on various topics, concerts, tastings, workshops and lectures fill the industrial monument with life all year round. Guided tours also take place regularly. The passenger ship "Henrichenburg" also goes on several canal cruises from the museum quay. Group tours for children, adults, school classes or people with disabilities complete the portfolio.
