The exhibition "From Line to Landscape" at the Museum of East Asian Art presents the work of Japanese graphic artist Tanaka Ryōhei (1933-2019) for the first time in Germany. Tanaka, a master of etching, created more than 770 etchings over five decades and printed over 100,000 copies in his own hand. His monochrome prints depict traditional Japanese landscapes, farmhouses and temples, captured in precise detail and poetic melancholy. With his extraordinary technique, which masterfully reproduces the textures of natural materials such as thatch and wood, Tanaka occupies a unique position in Japanese printmaking, which is otherwise dominated by woodblock prints.

The exhibition comprises 170 works by Tanaka, including 14 etchings that have been donated to the museum's collection by Tanaka's wife, Takiko. Tanaka's works combine the romanticized nostalgia of the Shin-hanga artists with the precision and creative power of the Sōsaku-hanga movement. The works invite a meditative approach and offer a deep insight into the beauty and transience of traditional Japanese landscapes and architecture.
