How regional museums work today
Reopened in the historic palace with a modern extension in 2019, the Sauerland Museum focuses on the history of the former Duchy of Westphalia from its beginnings to the present day. The collection presentation is complemented by interesting and well-attended temporary exhibitions.
- The museum café is run by master confectioner Andre Krengel from Arnsberg and invites you to linger with ice cream, cakes and regional pancake specialities. The "Kleine Altstadt-Café" is also recommended to all travellers who value a family atmosphere and regional products.
- Arnsberg, with its romantic winding alleyways and medieval centre, is also a stage destination on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route and an ideal place for a stopover with or without an overnight stay. There are permanently installed bicycle stands in the museum courtyard and visitors can charge their e-bikes at one of the six charging stations while visiting the museum.
- The temporary exhibitions in the architecturally attractive new building deal with cultural-historical themes and, at regular intervals, art exhibitions.
- Travellers have the best view of the idyllic Arnsberg Forest landscape from the Lörmecke Tower in Warstein, which is around 30 kilometres from the Sauerland Museum. The attraction with a plateau at a height of 35 metres is located on several hiking and cycling routes such as the Sauerland Forest Route. From the tower, guests can look out over the Hochsauerland, the Haarstrang and the Westphalian Bay all the way to the Teutoburg Forest.
- If you want to take a look around Warstein and learn more about its culture, a guided tour of the "Warsteiner Welt" is a must. The visitor centre provides insights into 265 years of brewing tradition. Of course, a cold Pilsner is part of the tour.
- Excursion tip: Lake Möhne is located 20 kilometres from Arnsberg and, as NRW's largest lake, is also known as the "Westphalian Sea". With 40 kilometres of shoreline and surrounded by the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park, it offers numerous paths for relaxing walks, long hikes and cycle tours right by the water. The waters also enjoy an excellent reputation as a fishing area due to the great variety of fish. The ADAC yacht school on the lake is the only one of its kind in Germany to offer training programmes for sailing and boating.
- Accommodation tip: Villa Regina on Lake Möhne or Hotel Altes Backhaus close to the museum in Arnsberg.
