LWL Roman Museum

Haltern am See

Haltern is one of the best-researched military bases from the time of Emperor Augustus. The control center of Roman power in Germania on the right bank of the Rhine was located on the banks of the River Lippe 2,000 years ago. Up to 5,000 Roman soldiers lived here in the so-called main camp, which probably bore the name Aliso. One of the most famous legions in Roman history was stationed here: Legio XIX, one of the three legions that perished in the Varus Battle in 9 AD.

Today, the LWL Roman Museum is located on this exact site. Over 1,200 original exhibits bear witness to the highly developed culture and technology of the Romans: to their enormous building achievements and logistics, their craftsmanship and everyday Roman life far from home. Behind the museum, at the Aliso Roman construction site, you can see with your own eyes how gigantic Roman camps must have looked. Parts of trenches and walls, a gate and a guardhouse have been reconstructed on the original site.

The historical setting, Roman finds from all over Westphalia, attractive events and an extensive educational program make the Roman Empire tangible in the truest sense of the word. Experience the world of the Romans - in the heart of Westphalia!
