Bielefeld's landmark, Sparrenburg Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1256, is enthroned on the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest above the old town. Visitors can discover the castle's past and present. Knowledgeable guides accompany visitors into the underground world of the casemates. The excavations tell stories of life at the fortress in the past. The 37-metre-high castle tower offers a fantastic panoramic view. The first port of call for visitors is the Visitor Information Center (BIZ), inaugurated in 2014, whose architect Max Dudler has won numerous awards for his tamped concrete construction. From April to October, employees of Bielefeld Marketing GmbH advise castle visitors every day and provide information about Sparrenburg Castle, souvenirs, hiking maps and tickets for visitor offers on the Bielefeld landmark.
